Punta Arenas
Near the southern end of Chile, on the Strait of Magellan, you'll find Punta Arenas. A nice town with hardy, winter-proof people, living in houses that are at the end of each long and harsh winter in need of a fresh coat of paint. A place not for the faint-hearted, but as you will see, very rewarding to visit. In addition to the picturesque waterfront, there are lovely old and well maintained buildings in town. |
The Best Western and one of the better hotels in town. There were some well-to-do hikers and adventurers in town, and the surrounding area is made for that activity |
And there are stores, restaurants, and outfitters that cater to them |
Church on the main street of town somewhat across from the Best Western |
A grand old building next to the central park. In case you wonder, there are usually lots of people about, but it was Sunday morning and hardly anyone was out. |
This place, however, was busy, There was at least one funeral taking place. I guess, winter takes its toll here. |
Next to the local Navy HQ, and part of the modern glass building complex, was this theater. |
Continuing on, past the theater, you'll arrive at this place. It's all about Antarctic exploration, but at this time of the year was closed. |
As this area used to look in the days of sailing ships. |
Some well known names here of those who risked everything to expand the knowledge of men (and garner the glory) |
